Shri Nava-avarana Poojai – A Glimpse

Shri Parameswaran lives in Kailayam. Shri Vishnu lives in Parkadal.  Similarly the most gorgeous Shri Lalithai SriVidhya abodes in Srichakram, located in midst of Shripuram. As Lord Shiva is to Lingam, and Shri Vishnu to Saligramam, Shri matha ShriVidhya Shri Rajarajeswari lives in Shrichakram. Shri Mahameru is the 3 dimensional form of ShriChakram.

It is very auspicious to celebrate Shri Rajarajeswari ShriVidhya in the form of Shri Maha Meru, the three dimensional Shrichakram. In simple words, the pooja that we do for ShriVidhya crossing the nine enclosures/veils in Shrichakram/Shri Mahameru is called as Nava-avaranam.

“Navavarana” comes from the Sanskrit “Nava” plus “avarana.” This is refering to nine enclosures, veils, or layers that are contained within the sacred Shri Chakra design.

Each avarana contains a certain number of triangles, petals or lines that correspond to specific aspects of Divine Mother’s powers of love, wisdom and pure consciousness. As we proceed through each avarana, we come closer to the central bindu, the source of bliss and divine consciousness.

"This highest consciousness, which can be experienced within, is signified by the central dot, or Bindu, within the Sri Chakra, where Divine Mother SriVidhya and Lord Siva exist in an eternally undifferentiated state of absolute oneness and pure bliss".

For each avaranam, specific flower arachanai and neivathiyam has to be done, besides dhooba deepa (Sambirani) aaradhanai, Mahadeeparadhanai and Pancha muha deeparadhanai. In each chakram, we have specific devi, Mudhra devathai along with certain aavarana devathas.

The mudhras act pivotal in the Sri Nava-avarana poojai.

“Dasamudhra Samaradhya”

Great sage Shri Parasuramar and the revered sage Shri Durvasar have written scripts and procedures to perform Shri Nava-avarana poojai.

And, in our temple, we are following Shri Parasuramar’s kalpa sutram (Guidelines). He, who is a proper and disciplined Srividhya upasagar, with his Guru’s grace and blessings, can only perform Shri Nava-avarana poojai.

Shri Anandhavalli, Sri Vidhya, Shri matha Shri Rajarajeswari gets delighted when the sadhaga shows Mudhra. In Mudhra, right hand depicts Lord Shiva and left depicts shri matha. And, hence Shri Vidhya Shri Anandhavalli gets excited and happy when we join both the hands and perform Mudhra and bless us abundantly with all happiness. It is said that by seeing, the sadhaka doing the DasaMudhras one can attain the benefits of attending the Shri Nava-avarana poojai.

In our Temple, we perform Navavarana poojai on the full moon day. Most people can appreciate the special beauty of the full moon. According to Sri Vidya, there is an uniquely auspicious energy available to us on the full moon day, and so this day is especially good for worshipping Sri Lalita Maha Tripurasundari Devi. In particular, it is highly auspicious to perform Sri Chakra Puja / Shri Nava-avarna poojai. Apart from Pournami, the poojai is done on Festival days and Utsava days.

Nava-avaranam begins with Nava-avaranam Homam followed by Shri Nava-avarana poojai, Thithi Nithya poojai (Poojai done for 15 kids as 15 Thithi Nithya Devathas), Kanya

poojai, Suvasini poojai ( Poojai performed for an old suvasini lady)and concludes with Shri Guru poojai. Shri Nava-avarana poojai can be performed at home as well, with all mentioned discipline and austerity.

“Suvasini archanai preethayay”

As stated, Shri matha Shri Anandhavalli gets pleased when we honor an old suvasini lady and perform poojai to her. It is said that ShriVidhya comes in disguise of an old suvasini lady (or) as a Kanya (girl kid) and takes the honour.

We invite you to join us for the Purnima Sri Chakra Puja or Homam. Whether one performs the puja, witnesses it, or just takes the sacred visesharghyam, one is sure to receive the most loving and compassionate blessings of Sri Rajarajeswari Devi.
